Weed Identification

Identifying your pond weeds is the first step in cost-effective treatment. Many aquatic weed species look alike, but must be treated in different ways. Herbicides and grass carp are expensive- so it’s important not to waste them on weeds that they won’t control. Not all weeds are bad, and some provide habitat and oxygen.

Examples:

Cattails can surround a pond if left un-checked, but they’re often confused with bulrush- a more desirable species. Lily pads are attractive and make great bass habitat, but they can also cover a pond in just a couple of years. Chara is an algae species that disguises itself as a leafy, rooted plant, but it doesn’t respond to typical treatments. Algae appears in several forms, and some are dangerous for pets and livestock.

Texas A&M provides a valuable guide for aquatic plant ID (Plant Identification | Pond Algae, Grass, Weeds, Moss, and More) for our region. Pond-ology also specializes in plant ID, and can prescribe a safe treatment plan.
